On November 23, 1976, the band performed a concert. A recording of this concert is held at the Sousa Archives (box 105, reels 4-5).

On February 21, 1977, the band shared a concert with the second jazz band. A recording of this concert is held at the Sousa Archives (box 252, reels 4-5). The program included "Spring Is Here", "Déjà Vu" (Tom Fredrickson), "Summertime" (probably "Other Summers", Jim Knapp), and "Lilac".

On April 7, 1977, the band held a split concert with Jazz Band II. A recording of this concert is held at the Sousa Archives (box 106, reels 10-11).

From May 12-14, 1977, the band recorded material for the album The Big, Wide World of Jazz (aka The World of Jazz). (Additional details on this recording may be found in "The Albums" section.)
